Background

As a passionate traveler and UX designer, I know the issues travelers have booking hotels online. I can understand what make users hesitate when booking a hotel. With my user-centric mindset, I find always a way to improve the experience and raise the user satisfaction.

 

Mission

Redesign the map view of the hotel search feature for trivago.com and look for opportunities for improvement.

 

Approach

I wanted to figure out how and when users use the map features. I decided to do user interviews first. I wanted to know which tools users usually use to search for a hotels online, what is important for them when making decisions and also what frustrates them.

 
 

 

The result was that the location is important for users so they use map features often. However, users aren't really satisfied with the map feature of current hotel search tools. The priority for them is first location and price, then user rating and then conditions. The hotel star ratings are not that important.

To view photos easily is also very important. But users don't want to have too much detailed info at one time which will distract them. It would be great if the map shows the surroundings or attractions to help them make decisions. Also it would be great if they can compare hotels easier without opening many browser tabs.

Based on information from the interview and my analysis of other platforms, I defined what is good, what is bad, why is it bad and needs to be improved. So I had some ideas for improvements!!!

 

 
 

After usability evaluation, I defined my goal. And started to make some wireframes about my ideas.

Goals

1. Simplify and restructure the priorities of information.

2. Give photos more attention.

3. Make it easier to switch between the list view and map view.

4. Enable user to see surroundings of the hotel he/she likes.

5. Make filters less complex.
