AI Voicer — Text to Speech Mobile App

UX/UI | Mobile App | 2022 – 2023

Background

AI Voicer is a text-to-speech iOS app that converts any text into natural-sounding audio using AI voice synthesis. I served as the sole product designer, responsible for the end-to-end design of the app from concept through App Store launch.

This was one of the early products from the same founding team behind Arcads — and the AI voice technology we explored here directly informed Arcads’ core product a year later.

The Problem: AI Voice Apps Were Hard to Use

Existing text-to-speech apps in 2022 were either overly technical (aimed at accessibility users with complex settings) or too limited (only one or two voices, no customisation). There was a clear gap for a consumer-friendly app that made AI voice synthesis feel magical and approachable.

The challenge: make cutting-edge AI voice technology feel as simple as sending a voice message.

My Design Process

Market Research
Audited the App Store's TTS category. Studied Speechify, Natural Reader, and Voice Dream Reader to understand what power users needed and where casual users were lost.

Define Core Use Cases
Identified three primary use cases: (1) listen to articles while commuting, (2) proofread your own writing by ear, (3) create voiceovers for social content. Each shaped different requirements.

Voice Selection UX
Designed an intuitive voice browser with playable previews. Users can audition any voice before committing — a critical interaction for building confidence in AI-generated audio.

Core Creation Flow
Designed the end-to-end flow: paste or type text → choose voice → adjust speed → preview → export or share. Reduced to 3 core steps with smart defaults.

Subscription & Monetisation
Designed the freemium model UX — free tier with limited characters per day, premium with unlimited access and premium voices. Paywall designed to highlight the value of premium voices through direct comparison.

AI Voicer exceeded expectations, reaching seven figures in annual recurring revenue within its first year. The app’s clean interface and the quality of the AI voices drove strong word-of-mouth growth. The lessons from designing voice selection and AI output preview directly shaped the actor browsing and video preview UX in Arcads.
